Use Your Gourd: Entertaining on a Budget

October 15, 2008 09:00 AM

You don’t need fancy serving bowls and glasses for entertaining; many pretty bowls and dishes can be found at thrift stores, and even right outside your door.

This time of year, pumpkins and gourds are everywhere – which makes them an ideal, unique and inexpensive centerpiece or serving piece for your get-togethers. When selecting a pumpkin, gourd or other fall vegetable, make sure that it sits level – otherwise you could have a topsy-turvy serving bowl and a mess on the table. (Tip: if it’s not level, you can cut off a small piece from the bottom with a sharp knife in order for it to have a level base)

Wipe down any dirt with a damp cloth, then cut open, hollow out and place your food inside (use a parchment paper liner if desired). Hollowed-out vegetables work best on dry, cold foods or foods that aren’t likely to leak through; runny soups probably aren’t the best idea, but candy corn or pumpkin butter would sit inside beautifully.
